COLLEGE STATION – Researchers from around the nation will convene here
next week to speculate on how the next generation of biotechnology may
help improve crops for food, feed and clothing.
The symposium will be 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday in the Reed Arena
Ballroom at Texas A&M University. The event is sponsored by Molecular and
Environmental Plant Sciences, an interdisciplinary group founded to
develop internationally recognized programs in research and graduate
education.
Dr. Roger Beachy, Danforth Plant Science Center president, will open
the session with his talk, "Finding the 'Achilles Heel' in Virus
Replication and Strategies that can Limit Disease in Transgenic Plants."
Among the other talks will be stress-regulated flowering and its
potential relevance to grain yields, improving soybeans for food and feed,
and breeding plants for salt tolerance.
