Plant biotechnology is the focus of a three-part satellite symposium beginning in September. Designed for research faculty, graduate students, Extension professionals, high school science teachers and private-sector plant biotechnologists, this program brings together leading experts from education, industry and government.
Participants will learn about important developments and issues in the biotechnology field. Satellite viewers also will have the opportunity to call in questions during the programs. This series of two-hour video conferences is offered free of charge by Texas A&M University, the University of Illinois and the University of Maryland. Broadcast time at Texas A&M, which may be viewed at KAMU, is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The symposium includes Plant Transformation on Sept. 25, Commercialization Strategies on Oct. 9 and Risk Assessment on Nov. 6.
The September conference will feature Texas A&M researchers Dr. Roberta Smith, soil and crop sciences, and Dr. Ron Newton, forestry science. Smith conducts research in transformation of crop plants and teaches tissue culture courses. Newton teaches plan physiology and concentrates his research on transformation of pine trees.
